Chorlton-cum-Hardy

Chorlton-cum-Hardy is a Manchester suburb, known locally as just Chorlton (but not to be confused with Chorlton-on-Medlock). Chorlton and the Wheelies was made there (hence the name). It is situated about three miles south west of Manchester city centre.

According to Wikipedia George Best used to live next door but one to Doris Speed who played Annie Walker (landlady of the Rovers Return) in Coronation Street many years ago. The Stone Roses were a Chorlton band. Other notable residents have included Freddie Garrity (of Freddie and the Dreamers), the Bee Gees spent nearly eight years of their childhood in Chorlton and I spent the first 18 years of my life there!

Anyway Chorlton is now a very good place for food shopping. My two favourite places Barbakan Delicatessen and Unicorn Grocery (happily almost opposite each other) are so important that they'll get seperate posts.

Khawaja Brothers Mini Market

Next door to Barbakan Delicatessen at 63-65 Manchester Road is Khawaja Brothers Mini Market. They sell all sorts of fruit and veg and have a wide range of different food.

W. H. Frost Butchers

At 12-14 Chorlton Place is W. H. Frost butchers. They sell locally sourced free range chicken, beef, lamb and pork and cure their own bacon.

Belgian Belly

At 514 Wilbraham Road, Belgian Belly sell Belgian beer and chocolates (including the ones with whole cherries including the stone) and have a cafe selling amongst other things, hot chocolate and waffles.

Out of the Blue

Besides being an excellent album by the Electric Light Orchestra, Out of the Blue can also mean a shop selling fish in Chorlton. They won the best Food and Drink Outlet 2007 in the Manchester Food and Drink Festival (5 out of the 6 nominees were from Chorlton). This fish shop sells sustainably caught fish from British inshore fleets. They also sell locally made Sushi.

North Star Deli

Since getting home I've discovered the North Star Delicatessen on 418 Wilbraham Road has it's own blog. A nice cafe and delicatessen, I bought some chocolate stollen and a cranberry topped mince pie.

Wild at Heart
Whilst researching this post I've also found Wild at Heart on 2 Railway Terrace. It looks a good place, comments please?

Have been shopping at khawaja bros mini mart for a few years now but I will never use again. A few times I have overheard the owner/gaffer insulting customers in urdu to his staff. I speak urdu too even though I'm 'english' and I was utterly disgusted about what they had said regarding one of their customers the last time I visited, would rather shop around the corner and anyway they charge way too much for essential household items such as cheese, coffee, etc

I love chorlton, grew up there, don`t live there now sadly and have never found an equivilent place. Frosts, the Barbakan Deli, Northern Star, Unicorn are all excellent places to shop and eat. The Unicorn existed long before organic, ethical shopping became a trend. I think it holds true to its values today and rather than following a trend, established one. I've never been disapointed by the afformentioned. Other favourite haunts I would recomend are, `chorlton bookshop`, they sell a great range of books to enjoy with selection of chocs from the 'Belgian Belly' next door. The 'Hilary Step' is a great pub just down Upper Chrolton Rd rd nr Whalley Range and next door to the H'Step is Jam st Cafe...great breakfasts, but get there early to avoid the crowds and get a seat...
