Stottesdon

As you can see, the Fighting Cocks is a lovely half timbered pub in the heart of rural Shropshire.

There used to be two pubs in Stottesdon and another in nearby Bagginswood. Sadly the other two have closed (I had my first chat with my wife in one and the first date with my wife in the other). The shop and petrol station in the village closed many years ago.

Happily the Fighting Cocks appears to be thriving. When landlady Sandra Jefferies took over the pub 10 years ago she decided to make it the heart of the community.

The pub serves excellent local food and in 2004 Sandra decided to open a village shop that's attached to the pub (the entrance is on the right hand side of the top picture).

The shop sells all the basics; fruit and vegetables local meat, but also unusual jams and other items, usually made by small and local producers.

You may be able to buy a piece of cheesecake (as served in the restaurant next door). When we last went we bought some home made bread pudding with apple. I forget the exact cost, but it would have barely covered the cost of the ingredients. If only more villages had people like Sandra running their pub.
