Oatcake Kitchen

Many people don't realise there's a Dresden in the Potteries, as well as seven Dresdens in America, a Dresden in Canada, and of course, the "Florence of the Elbe" - Dresden in Germany. I enjoyed the recent Dan Cruikshank programme, Adventures in Architecture when he visited the great German baroque city, examining the terrible bombings and how it's been rebuilt.

Anyway back to the Potteries. If you're interested in how Dresden got it's name read this article. Dresden in Germany, is famous for its porcelain and it's thought the promoters of the estate near Longton in Victorian times thought naming it after the German city would help facilitate the sale of shares and building plots.

Dresden near Longton can't compete with it's German namesake for it's architecture, but it does have a couple of shop selling oatcakes! Unlike most oatcake shops you can sit down in the Oatcake Kitchen if you wish and eat them in the café. I don't think they actually make the oatcakes on the premises however. Inside the café was a picture of Tony Hancock and the blood donor, various old post cards, an interesting photo of inside an old pottery and an ode to an oatcake!

An oatcake reminiscent of those at High Lane - but cheaper and slightly larger
