Sefton Park

I've cheated sneaking this post in, as the Palm House, in Sefton Park, Liverpool is not a good food shop. However if you're going to visit Lark Lane Market (see previous post) it's not far and well worth the visit. Originally opened in 1896, it measures 25m high, on a base of red granite from the Isle of Mull. There are 3,710 flat panes of glass, all individually cut.
The Palm House has recently undergone a £3.5 million restoration.

I picked up a leaflet (also available here) which informed me that there was (amongst many other things) a banana plant inside. Surprisingly I couldn't find it and asked two employees, who also didn't know where it was!

One of the employees was good enough to enlist a gardener (who was outside cutting grass) who kindly pointed out where it was. Can you spot the bananas on the photo? It's not warm enough in Liverpool for the bananas to ripen properly.

Also in the banana bed, according to the leaflet you can also find some unusual spices, curry leaf and cardamom, which is apparently the world’s third most expensive spice?

Outside there's some interesting statues, including one of Colombus, with the inscription "The discoverer of America was the maker of Liverpool".
