Manchester - Arndale

Considering the large population, there are surprisingly few good food shops in the centre of Manchester.

If you go south to places like Chorlton or Didsbury you can find plenty. If you go North to Whitefield there's Slatterys and Roma. There is, of course, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols, but I don't think they're targeting people on my lowly salary!

At the High Street end of the Manchester Arndale centre is what is now a surprisingly good food market. There's a fresh fish shop (pictured at the top of this post), butchers, a shop selling Greek food, a Polish shop, a fruit and veg shop (selling Ebboes amongst other things), a sweet shop and the Cheshire based Paradise Brewery.

The Italian shop called Gastronomica (also pictured) apparently also has a branch in London.

A lot of the places sell food and drink to eat in as well as to take away.

I think it's a big improvement on the smelly and dirty looking market that used to be there.
