Tatton Hall

Tatton Hall gets over 750,000 visits each year, so you may already know this property. A fine house and gardens, it's situated in a 1,000 acre deer park.
The Housekeeper's Store was refurbished this year and here you can buy Tatton venison from the ancient parkland, a tasty selection of pork produced from the Tatton working farm and Hebridean lamb and game from the estate. You can also buy meat from Andrew Jackson, and if you're vegetarian there's Cheshire cheese and leek sausages made by nearby Karol Bailey.
There's a good cheese counter, guaranteed to always stock at least one cheese from four different countries of the British Isles and at least one Cheshire cheese.
Tatton’s walled kitchen garden dates back to 1750 and there's a separate shop selling produce from the garden. When I called you could buy stripey beetroot, white icicle radish and Kohl Rabi.

I bought some Kohl Rabi, before I read Nigel Slater's words on this vegetable - "Having tried out a number of ideas for this sputnik-shaped root, I have concluded that I really don't ever want to see one again. Perhaps the fact that slugs and bugs avoid it like the plague (which is why it turns up with grim regularity in many organic boxes) should give a clue as to why most people give it the cold shoulder."

I think Nigel was a bit harsh, I'll certainly be going back to Tatton, but then again, probably not for the Kohl Rabi!
