Nantwich

I've started this blog with Nantwich (a small town in South Cheshire) as this is where I live. Nantwich is a great place for food lovers. There are many small independent shops and there's an excellent market.

Nantwich Markets
Nantwich Market is on Thursdays and Saturdays. There's a good Country Market (formerly known as WI Market) on Thursday mornings.

There are some good fruit and vegetable sellers in the market, my favourite is the one nearest to the back entrance (towards Nantwich Civic Hall).

Konfections make superb hand made chocolates. They're not cheap but I prefer quality to quantity!

Furber’s Pantry sell good pies and some foods for people with diabetes and in the outside market the London Road Bakehouse sell bread.

Also in the market is Demeter wholefoods (see my post on Sandbach).

Nantwich Farmers Market takes place on the last Saturday of the month, except in December when it's the Saturday before Christmas, and in January it's on 19th January 2008 to avoid clashing with the Battle of Nantwich re-enactment.

Nantwich Shops
One of my favourite shops is Welch's delicatessen on Hospital Street, which has a coffee shop and small museum at the back of the shop.

Nantwich has some excellent butchers, try Brookshaws and Clewlows.

Chatwins bakery has an interesting range of cakes. For bread I must confess I go to Sainsburys for their excellent granary. Try also Snapes bread which is sold in the Inglenook Tea Rooms on Pillory Street and Roberts bread (sold in Welch's) has an excellent shelf life.

For those with a sweet tooth Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shop (next to the Crown Hotel) is worth a visit.

Nantwich Food Festival
Every September the Nantwich food festival takes place with around 100 speciality producers and demonstrations etc.

Further afield
Just out of Nantwich is Cheerbrook Quality Farm Foods and Andrew Jackson's Great Tasting Meat just over 3 miles north of Nantwich (take the Wettenhall Road off the A51 at Reaseheath).

Snugburys are famous for their ice cream and also for their fantastic straw sculptures.

I love this blog it is so bright and cheerful and easy to read. I didn't know there was a market until now and I was very interested to see that London Road Bakehouse are on the indoor market. We tried this bread at Rhode Hall Farmer's Market and it is absolutely georgeous bread and they bake it all themselves unlike most bread stalls. I will certainly be visiting in the next few weeks. thanks

A quick note to thank Bill on his kind comments about the Great Tasting Meat Company. If you're bothered about Jamie Oliver's program last night on the state of British pork production, you need look no further than Gate Farm for traditional breeds reared in a high welfare traditional manner, and you can visit the farm shop to see for yourself. Looking forward to seeing Bill soon to discuss the state of the British cuisine!
