Crewe

"All trains go to Crewe, all roads go to Nantwich"! There's always been a bit of rivalry (hopefully friendly) between the people of Crewe and Nantwich which is 4 miles west of Crewe.

I've decided to do Crewe in 2 parts, the second part will cover some of the fascinating shops dealing with international produce.

I start with Crewe market. There's an indoor (pictured above) and outdoor section.

In the indoor section I went to Stuart's fish stall. It's not often these days you can go into a fish shop and buy for 4 meals and get change from £4!

Admitedly I did buy 2 herrings and conger eel steaks, so not the dearest of species!

Stuart is pleasant person, who offered to clean and fillet the herring and also gave me advice on to how to cook the conger eel.

When I got home 2 minutes on Google produced this recipe, which I tried.

To be honest I wouldn't say conger eel was my favourite fish, but it wasn't an expensive experiment.

Delikatessa
Near the outdoor market and just three
doors along from the delightful Lyceum Theatre, Delikatessa is a family-owned and run quality delicatessen, café and coffee

On Queensway (near Marks and Spencer) Humbugs sell the traditional
sweets I remember having as a child.

Not as good a selection as http://www.aquarterof.co.uk/
but this blog is supposed to be about local shops!

At the Creative Cake Centre all cakes
are individually made on the premises - moist rich fruit cakes and sponges.
