Unicorn Grocery

Last night Channel 4 showed Hugh's Chicken Run, where Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall launched his campaign against intensively reared chicken (see http://www.chickenout.tv). Jamie Oliver also launches Jamie's Fowl Dinners on Channel 4 on 11th January 2008. So it seems rather apt that today I should feature a workers cooperative with a stated aim to trade in wholesome foodstuffs and household goods of non-animal origin.

Even if you're not vegetarian, the Unicorn Grocery in Chorlton is a great and very special place to shop. Unicorn Grocery is a worker's cooperative, which means they are owned and run by their workforce.

They have a large choice of organic fruit and vegetables (and provide paper bags not horrible plastic bags to put them in).
They focus on regionally produced, seasonal fruit and vegetables.

They've got a wide selection of beans and pulses, check out their web site for recipes on what to do with them.

The staff are all very helpful, as are the other customers, if you spot some unusual ingredient and need help.

You can buy fairtrade teas, coffee and juices, there's a deli and they sell bread.
They sell sustainable cleaning products. They also have organic wines, beers and lagers and a good selection of cider.

They've evn got a living roof!

Excellent products sold at cheap prices by people with a conscience. You can't say fairer than that!

Please note they are closed on Mondays (see their web site for opening times).
