Ashbourne - Patrick & Brooksbank

There are some shops featured in this blog which I would visit if I was in the area, but I wouldn't make a special journey to. I would recommend a visit to Patrick & Brooksbank even if you live miles away!

Their web site says "probably the world's most delicious hand made gourmet foods" and who am I to disagree! It's an exciting shop packed full of interesting foods.

Fine cheeses, excellent Belgian chocolates, interesting Italian biscuits, home made cookies and quality frozen ready meals are just some of the things they sell. On Saturday I bought some delicate Cray Fish tarts.

They've also got a cafe next to the shop.

They used to have a shop in Bakewell (which sadly closed about 9 years ago) but sell what they claim is "the proper Bakewell".

The deli may be OK but avoid the cafe at all costs unless you like your food overpriced with sloppy service.
We visited last week expecting a treat but were disappointed. £4.00 for one tiny factory baked croissant with mountains of butter and jam isn't funny. (Bearing in mind at Aldi you can get 4 x superior croissants for 89p!) The croissant wasn't even warm!

The service wasn't any better. With only a couple of other customers in the place the two staff on duty were slow, forgot drinks for one of party, kicked unused tea bags around the floor before replacing them back in their box all in full view of customers. They didn't seem to have a clue - heavens knows how they would ever manage if it were ever to get busy???!!

Why did we end up there in the first place? Not surprisingly because the other cafes in town were all busy! Will we ever learn?

We really like the cafe.

It does the best breakfast my husband has ever had and he is quite the connesouir when it comes to a fry up!

We have never had "sloppy" service but we avoid the busy times.

Yes it is rather expensive, but it is in keeping with the antique and boutique crowd.

There are plenty of less expensive options, not only with sloppy service but sloppy food too.
