Ludlow - Myriad Organics

I can remember the controversy when Tesco decided to open a store in Ludlow. Many thought it would spoil the town, which has lots of high quality independent retailers. Now the German discounter, Aldi, is now also hoping to have a store in Ludlow. Aldi are using an eco-friendly roof covered with alpine plants to try and persuade the planners!

Opposite Tesco in Ludlow is Myriad organics. It’s a really nice shop with friendly and helpful people serving you. Sometimes organic fruit and vegetables can look unattractive, but not in this shop.

They sell Dairy House (http://www.thedairyhouse.co.uk) products from Weobley, in Herefordshire and meat from Graig Farm (http://www.graigfarm.co.uk) in Powys. They have a good selection of dried and tinned foods.

They also do take away food and offer an organic catering service.

They also have locally baked bread and some other nice baked products. It’s also a very good shop for anyone with a food allergy or intolerance. When I called they were selling gluten free Easter biscuits.

Myriad also offer an organic veg box scheme http://www.organicbyorder.co.uk

I think many of us saw Tesco as the thin end of the wedge that would take Ludlow closer to the homogeneous town centre that is the new Britain.
It was and more will follow Aldi - I hope the planners remember that a green roof does not make a shop friendly to it's local environment.
Environment based on local community, history and all the other aspects that contribute to Ludlow being a special place.

How environmentally sustainable is it to drive the supermarket's good half way across the continent? We will keep on fighting to ensure that Ludlow's high st remains a prime example of diversity.
