Manchester - Love saves the day

I spent the first 18 years of my life in Manchester, it's fascinating to see how the city has changed. The picture above shows a lock keepers cottage in the foreground and the Beetham Tower (also known as the Manchester Hilton) in the background. The tower is over 168 metres in height, making it the tallest building in the UK outside of London. I'm not sure if I like it, do architects not do symmetry any more?

We went to Manchester to visit Body Worlds, an exhibition of real human bodies where plastination has been used to preserve them. It sounds macabre, but it was very educational and tastefully done. Both diseased and healthy organs are displayed, so you can take your kids and show them what smoking does to your lungs or what alcohol does to your liver!

We went for lunch to Love saves the day, a cafe and deli which is next door but one to the entrance to Deansgate railway station.

Having gone a circuitous route involving the canal and back streets I could see my wife was wondering where I was taking her to! A neon sign outside the shop was flashing "sexy" and "food" which probably gave a bad impression. If I'd done my research properly before we went, I could have told her that Love saves the day was set up by Chris Joyce who was once a drummer in Simply Red.

I first went to Love saves the day when they were on Tib Street (they're no longer there). They were one of the first to sell the excellent Cheshire chocolates.

On Sundays they specialise in Brunch. It's had several positive write ups in The Independent and was packed before 12:00. My wife had an English breakfast, but I think I chose better and went for spicy huevos rancheros with chilli salsa and parmesan. Whilst we were waiting (and we were there over an hour and are fast eaters) I had plenty of time to study the food for sale.

The shop sells (amongst other things) Cheshire cheese, Cheshire Chocolates, Cheshire Smokehouse bacon, and Chat Moss Herbs.

They also sell Love saves the day beer (made by the Millstone Brewery), wine and champagne. The beer won best alcoholic beer in the North West Fine Foods awards, but I'll need a sponsor before I can report on the champagne.

They're one of the first shops I've been in that sells 3 different sorts of rissotto rice (Arborio, Carnaroli and Vialone Nano, click here for more information about when to use each variety).

They've also a branch on Thomas Street in the now trendy Northern Quarter. This branch looks a bit smarter, but I think it has less food items for sale.
