Food Fraud

In the latest (May 2008) edition of Which? magazine there's an interesting article on Food Fraud. This includes selling eggs from battery farmed hens as "free range", non-organic meat as organic, selling farmed fish as wild and even dyeing basic olive oil green with chlorophyll to make it look like extra virgin olive oil.

The level of food fraud in the UK has been estimated by some to be as high as 10% or £7 billion a year! The article quotes public analysts as saying the 10p a person we spend annually on testing our food for adulteration is not enough.

I think that the shops featured in this blog are generally safer than most. If you speak to the owners they usually know a lot about their suppliers and are passionate about their produce and take great care to avoid selling the sort of products featured in the Which? article.
