The National Trust

For years I was critical of National Trust gift shops. They all seemed to sell Kendal mintcake whether they're in the Lake District (fair enough) or Cornwall! However in recent years the National Trust has done a lot to support local produce and local recipes. They now have a food policy, using quality, local, seasonal and sustainable food and using traditional recipes where possible.

So I would encourage you to visit their shops, restaurants and tea rooms.

I've been particularly pleased to see that the National trust is supporting their tenant farmers, who have farm shops or operate box schemes. To help support their tenants, the National Trust compiles a directory of farm foods and crafts.

The picture at the top of this post shows the Birmingham Back to Backs which the National Trust have lovingly restored. It's very close to the centre of Brimingham (you need to book in advance on a tour). It's a great experience (it starts of in a sweet shop). I always thought it's a shame that the Trust hasn't taken on the Hole in the Wall Staffordshire oatcake shop.
