As you enter Burslem a welcome sign proclaims Burslem to be the "Mother Town of the Potteries".
Visitor to the Potteries often get confused. Novelist Arnold Bennett (of omelette fame) wrote about the Five Towns, when in fact there are six (Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and Longton). And today the commercial centre of Stoke-on -Trent is Hanley and not Stoke!
Talking of Burslem (or Bursley as it was called in his novels) Arnold Bennett wrote "Beauty was achieved, and none saw it"!
There's many fine buildings like the Old Town Hall and the Queens Hall.
Sadly the market was closed for refurbishment when I visited.
Happily Burslem Oatcakes were open!
Burslem Oatcakes would definitely be high up on my list of favourite oatcake shops. A good oatcake (with a nice texture) and excellent friendly service. They give you the option of having it wrapped up (to take away) or on a paper plate (which is much better if you're eating it straight away.
