Great Tasting Meat Company

People come a considerable distance to shop at Andrew Jackson's Great Tasting Meat Company.
As you enter the shop you'll see fresh vegetables, grown on the farm or locally. They had some nice spring cabbage and turnips when I called at the weekend.

There's a strong emphasis on animal welfare at Gate Farm. Andrew uses traditional breeds and the stock are outdoor reared and grass fed. All the meet is hung for along time and Andrew has an excellent butcher working on the farm.

Inside there's an interesting selection of local food, including Mrs Darlington's preserves (made in Crewe) and the excellent Tiresford Guernsey Gold yoghurt. The best bit though is the stunning display of meat. This year their beefburgers won the National Supreme Champions award at the Meat and Food Traders’ Food and Meatex show in Birmingham. The shop is particularly good for barbecues. A popular dish for special occasions is their Portmanteau - a boneless loin of lamb, stuffed with liver, onion, smoked bacon and mushroom pate and covered in breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese.

You can also buy the meat at Nantwich Farmers Market and Northenden Farmers Market or on-line.

I took Channel 4 reporter, Andrew Webb, to the Great Tasting Meat Company (to put on the Channel 4 Big British Food map), click here to see Geoff Broomhall filleting a loin of lamb and making a Portmanteau.

The pigs at the bottom of this post are a cross between Gloucester Old Spots, British Saddlebacks and Tamworth. Andrew also has an old Large Black boar, which he now keeps as a pet, called William. When I got home and told my wife Andrew keeps an old boar called William she said "so do I"!
