Whitby - E Botham & Sons

Elizabeth Botham started her bakery in Whitby in 1865 and it still retains a Victorian air. You can buy traditional favourites like Yorkshire curd tart, Yorkshire brack (a tea loaf made with their own tea), stem ginger brack, maids of honour, plum bread, Sally Lunn (a different tea loaf) and Whitby gingerbread.

Tea and cakes go together in Yorkshire and E Botham & Sons won an award of excellence in the UK Tea Council's Top Tea Place Awards.

As a child I was told "Fruit cake without cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze". Thanks to Google I now find others saying the same about apple pie without cheese! Either way Bothams also sell Wensleydale cheese.

The photograph below of their window doesn't do their product justice, but I took it to show you their traffic light cakes which I used to enjoy as a child.
They've got two shops in Whitby (the one below is on Baxtergate) and one in Sleights.
Quite a few shops now sell their products (check their web site for details) and Bothams now do world-wide delivery. Some of their cakes can last a long time, but not in our house!
