Llangollen

Llangollen is a great place to study transport!  The A5, built by Thomas Telford, goes through the town on it's way to Snowdonia and Anglesey.  The Welsh branch of the Shropshire Union canal (frequently known as the Llangollen canal) starts just above Llangollen on the River Dee at the Horseshoe Falls and passes through the town before canal before dramatically crosses the valley 126 feet above the River Dee at the spectacular Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.  I've never understood why Telford didn't build the canal on the other side of the valley, to avoid building this aqueduct?  There's also the Llangollen Steam Railway, closed by Beeching and which now carries over 100,00 visitors per year.
Anyway this blog is supposed to be about good food shops, and there are plenty in  Llangollen.  It's got two fruit and vegetable shops, a wholefood cooperative, good delicatessens and good butchers.
I'll cover some of these businesses in more detail in the next few posts.  If you need an extra reason to visit Llangollen, this weekend (18th & 19th October 2008) it's the Llangollen Food Festival
