Reaseheath Apple Festival

Today and tomorrow (18-19 October 2008) it's the Apple Festival at Reaseheath College.

There's lots of rare varieties on display and also fruit garden tours throughout the day. I counted over 70 varieties of apples!

I love some of the names, like Bedfordshire Foundling:
or Bloody Ploughman:
or Peasegood's Nonsuch:
and Sheep's Nose Pippin:

I'm always amused by the story of the supermarket buyer who rejected some Worcester Permaine apples as they weren't round enough! The buyer clearly didn't realise that Permaine means pear shaped and they shouldn't be perfect spheres.

Varieties like Ashmead's Kernel:
or Orleans Reinette:
may not win a beauty contest, but just try tasting them! What's your favourite variety?

There's also free advice on growing fruit
and apple tasting.

It's 10am - 4pm and admission is free!

p.s. if you prefer your apples crushed, squeezed and fermented, you can buy my favourite cider, Ralph's Cider, made in a great sounding place called "Old Badland" at Llangollen Food Festival this weekend. But be warned, some of his ciders are drier than my sense of humour!
