The picture at the top of this post is the Ancient High House in Stafford, which is the largest remaining timber framed town house in England. I've always found Staffordshire people very friendly, and Stafford is well worth a visit for good food. If your visiting Stafford try to visit on the second Saturday in the month (so there's one tomorrow) when there's a Farmers' Market in the Market Square:
There's a good selection of stalls, including Kev's oatcakes from Stoke. You can buy tarts like chicken, leek & tarragon or smoked ham, brie and pancetta from the Local Tart Company.
I liked the stall below, where everything was a superalative: very short shortbread, very oatty (sic) biscuits, very hot ginger biscuits, very lovely local butter fruit crumbles.
For some reason the spotted dick wasn't very spotted but just spotty!
