Liverpool W H Lung and Tai Pan

I've always enjoyed dim sum, and recently read that the Tai Pan restaurant in Liverpool on a Sunday was the place to go for good dim sum.  This blog is supposed to be about good food shops, but happily there's W H Lun's Chinese supermarket on the ground floor.
If you've never been in a Chinese supermarket, you really ought to go.  Staples like rice and soy sauce are considerably cheaper than what you would normally pay, and yes they do have bags of rice smaller than 20kg!  There's also lots of things you may not recognise.

This sign for fresh old chicken amused me:
In the West we seem to associate old with "not fresh", when our grandmothers would know that an older bird would have more taste.

The shop had special items in for the New Year, including these fish cakes which I think are called Nian Gao:
They're made from glutinous rice flour, but my wife didn't fancy trying one and I decided they'd probably got too much sugar in for myself.  We went upstairs to the restaurant which was very busy:
I've been in many restaurants where you spend half the time trying to catch the attention of the waiters. Here it's the opposite, every few seconds someone arrives offering you a different dish to try:
The cost of each dish was usually less than £3, so if you go in a group you can try lots of different things without spending a fortune.
