Regular readers of this blog, who know Nantwich, may be surprised that I've never mentioned Chatwins the bakers, or Clewlows the butchers. The reason is simple, I've always been scared I'll run out of posts and have kept them back for times of emergency! I'm not in that situation now - but Chatwins always have a particularly good selection of cakes at Easter so I thought why delay any further? Founded in 1913 by John Chatwin, it's still a family business run by John Chatwin's three great-grandsons. The bakery is in the heart of Nantwich and there's two shops in the town and other shops in Alsager, Chester, Congleton, Crewe, Northwich, Sandbach and Upton by Chester in Cheshire and Hanley, Longton, Newcastle, Stafford, Stone and Tunstall in Staffordshire. Their long serving member of staff Trevor Mooney was named "Baker of the Year" in 2006.
At Easter, besides hot cross buns, you can buy creme egg rabbits, rabbit dips, fondant chicks, crispy cake nests or Easter cup cakes. Besides the attractive cakes, try one of their hot pork and apple rolls for a tasty and inexpensive snack.
