The Welbeck Farm Shop

Stichelton cheese has already been mentioned more than once in this blog, and I thought it was time I visited the Welbeck Estate where it's made.    Welbeck Farm Shop is situated in the grounds of Welbeck Abbey (the home of the grandson of the 7th Duke of Portland), in an area appropriately known as The Dukeries.

It's an attractive farm shop with beef from just down the road, an attractive display of fruit and vegetables:
and some excellent pies:
including pork pies made with or without Stichelton cheese.

Stichelton is the first organic raw milk blue cheese produced in Britain since the late 1960s. Stichelton is like a Stilton, except that it is made from unpasteurised milk and ironically as a result can't be called Stilton!
If you're interested in cheese you might like to read this article by Mathew Fort (a food writer I greatly respect) in the Guardian.   Besides the Stichelton there are other fine cheeses - the cheese from the shop is sourced in conjunction with the Neal's Yard Dairy.

When you've finished with the shop, there's the Limehouse Café (which if the food is as good as the home made mushroom soup I bought in the shop would definitely be worth a visit):

There's also The Harley Gallery (built on the site of the nineteenth century gasworks for the Estate) which sells fine art and crafts, and also the Dukeries Garden Centre which sells a good selection of fresh herbs:
