Alstonefield - The George

Alstonefield is a beautiful Derbyshire village with lots of 18th century stone buildings and a fantastic pub.
Emily Hammond, the current landlady of the George, is the third generation of her family to be running this pub. It's a great pub with good food and drink, even the fish and chips looked and tasted spectacular:
As you go out of the back door, past pots of herbs:
and their vegetable garden:
you will find the George's Farm Shop:
Emily opened the farm shop in December 2008, in the courtyard to the rear of the pub where wool sales were once held. Here I was served by Emily's mum, who was enthusiastic and passionate about what they sell.
We bought some award winning Oatty (sic) biscuits made by Sarah Gayton of Taste of the Moorlands four miles down the road, after Emily's mum said we wouldn't be able to eat just one! Much of the food is locally sourced, although the air dried salami came from Deli Farm Charcuterie in Cornwall and their delicious icecream come from the Cotswold Ice Cream Company. It said on the lid that it was Fairtrade, which guarantees a better deal for Third World Producers, does this mean we're now a Third World Country?

Organic beef and lamb come from Lower Hurst Farm, and pork and poultry come from White Peak Farm Butchery of Tissington. There's a small selection of carefully selected cheese, when I called they were selling Tunworth from Hampshire Cheeses and Lincolnshire Poacher cheese.
