La Mare Wine Estate

It's a bit of a tourist trap, but we enjoyed our visit to La Mare Wine Estate. We went round the vineyards, where our guide told us their wine maker was in church praying for good weather. We were told that the next few days would be crucial for the 2009 vintage - the next day it chucked it down; so much for that approach!

They also have their own Jersey cider apples orchards and produce a traditional bottle conditioned cider called ‘Pompette'. Most of their cider is double distilled in an old distillery bought from Calvados to make Jersey Apple Brandy.
There's an attractive shop, where you can buy their wines and spirits, including a cream liqueur made with their Jersey Apple Brandy and their own fudge and biscuits.
They also make and sell a product called Jersey black butter. It doesn't contain butter, but is made with sugar, liquorice, allspice apples, and cider. If you want to make your own, I've found a recipe here. Traditionally they stirred it for 24 hours on Black Butter nights (after the apple harvest), so you may prefer to buy it!
Samples were provided of their preserves, so you can try before you buy.
They also have their own chocolatier, Darren Stower who is Australian, and previously worked on the QE2.
My independent testers declared that the Jersey cream tea they had here was the best they had on the island!
