Chesterfield

This blog likes oatcakes, good old fashioned markets and churches with crooked spires. You can find all 3 in Chesterfield. The spire of the parish church leans 9 feet 5 inches from its true centre. Not being from Chesterfield, I rather liked the story that once a virgin once got married in the church and the spire was so surprised it got twisted trying to have a look! One version even goes on to say, that if it ever happens again, the spire will straighten!  However I think the version about unseasoned wood during the construction is more plausible.

Anyway it's a lovely 14th century church and well worth a visit, - it's the largest church in Derbyshire.

Next to the church is the Tourist Information Centre, one of the most helpful I've ever been in. Here you can get a leaflet about Chesterfield Market (the subject of my next post) and some Chesterfield Mints. They're made in the town by Willetts Sweets who've been making traditional boiled sweets since 1927.
