Helmsley

Helmsley is a market town situated on the River Rye between Thirsk and Pickering.  It's near the notoriously steep Sutton Bank, which ascends the Hambleton Hills.  The last time I went up Sutton Bank, a coach had stalled and couldn't restart on one of the steep bends!  So we now tend to avoid that road if we can!

Sir Giles Gilbert Scott's gothic memorial to the second Baron of Feversham dominates the market square:
There's a market here every Friday.  It's a great town for tourists to stop for a break.

There's also Helmsley Castle, and just by the castle is Auntie Annes Castlegate Bakery:
where you can buy Yorkshire curd tarts.
