Ellesmere - Vermeulen & Son

Ellesmere is a delightful town in North Shropshire.  There's nine glacial meres in the area, so it's known as the "North Shropshire Lake District".  The Welsh branch of the Shropshire Union canal flows through the town.  This explains how Ellesmere Port, which is situated where the canal meets the Mersey Estuary, got its name.

If your going walking (there's a nice walk here), I should call at Vermeulen's first to get some refreshments (and afterwards to take something home).
It's a lovely traditional bakery and continental delicatessen.  The web site claims "all the ingredients are produced locally - within 10 miles of Ellesmere (except the black pudding - that comes from Lancashire- where else?)"!

They do good bread, (try the granary rolls):
There's pies
and bread and butter puddings:
They make good, traditional cakes, I've not seen doughnuts shaped like people before:
If you're only going to by one thing, buy a butter bun:
I've only seen them in North Shropshire, it's a plain and simple cake that's delicious when bought fresh.  Is photographed on our car seat, as they all got eaten before our walk even started, so never got home to grace a plate!

Nice blog entry about a great 'proper' shop. I am compiling some visitor itineraries for the Ellesmere area for Shropshire Council and the area tourism partnership. I would like to use one of your pics of Vermeulens - would you let me know if that is OK and if so is it possible to get a high res version? My email is alison.patrick@shropshire.gov.uk

Would be far better with a of staff training - far too slow and waiting for them to complete private conversations is a bit of a pain. Shouldn't be handling sticky cakes with bare hands either :(
