Nantwich Food Festival

It's Nantwich Food Festival today, tomorrow and on Sunday.  This year it's moved from Mill Island into the centre of the town and (good news) there's no entry fee.

Inside the Civic Hall is a wide variety of food producers:
including this stunning display of fruit and veg from Box Fresh:
Fiona Asson was selling crab, crayfish and oysters:
and of course Fish in a Box
and you could get chips from Cheshire Farm Chips:
For those with a sweet tooth there's several stall selling cupcakes:
and a chocolate fountain:
Being a cheese lover I went for Jo Heler's Yabber Dabber Blue
(a dabber is someone born In Nantwich) and also Godfrey Williams' Nantwich Blue cheese:
Outside the Civic Hall the Port of Lancaster are selling kippers:
There's (cheesy?) signs on the pavement to guide you around various food attractions in the town.
Opposite Crescent Garage are marquees with more food attractions:
 and also birds of prey:
Nantwich market is always worth a visit:
and in the square there's Nantwich farmers' market:
with regular stalls like Scrumptillious

Sausages are being cooked outside Clewlows and the Crown Hotel:
where there's also a Hog Roast:
The new format is a great success.  They're expecting over 20,000 visitors, - so my advice is to get there early, or go by train.

I must say that I preferred the old format by far, even with the entry fee ! I went on Saturday and the town centre was very crowded making it a struggle to get to the stalls and there were queues to get into the food hall. The town centre of Nantwich is just too small to accomodate this size of event as the streets are very narrow. They should keep the farmers market in the town centre as usual but move the fair back to its original site.

I did ask why it had moved and received two answers:
1. It was due to be on the field as usual but drainage work was to be carried out during the festival which then got cancelled, too late for the fair to be resited.
2. It was to involve the town centre more. As the original site was 2 minutes walking time then the town centre was involved anyway !

I popped over on Saturday and was very dissapointed with the food festival it self, the farmers market was great as always, but I couldn't find most of the events being held, as did other people walking around the streets looking lost like me.
I did find the producers on my way out at Volunteer fields, poor them being put out of town and away from anything happening.
I hope they return to the old format next year and make it a proper event not be carried on the popularity of the regular farmers market.

Totally agree! The old format was much better, didnt enjoy being pushed about and didnt get to see as much as i'd hoped. The weather was very kind on Saturday to be walking from each side of the town & back, but would have a real pain if it had rained. Please move it back in 2011, otherwise i will give it a miss!

Have to agree with the other comments - we live in Nantwich and have a tea-party every year for forty or fifty friends who visit us and then go to the Food Festival. They were all disappointed as it seemed little more than a slightly larger Farmers' Market which we have every month anyway.

Too crowded, not enough on, poor signage in town and generally nothing like previous years. We went on Friday and Sunday too and exhibitors we know were really unhappy because they didn't see many actual buyers and on Friday hardly saw anyone at all in the Civic Hall.

It just looked a bit amateur to be honest although I am sure the new team who put it on did their best. It simply won't survive unless it is radically overhauled next year. I am sure some exhibitors lost money and they won't be back. Most importantly, lots of people who visited, our friends included, won't be back next year unless it improves.

The fesival had been organised by the council in previous years this year it had been taken over in May by a team of volunteers on a much reduced budget.Surveys are showing that people did enjoy the festival as there were over 200 events happening over the weekend and we have had many favourable comments. Economically it was better for the town as you would be surprised how few people previously went into town. And many charities raised much needed funds over the weekend. It was our first year, we put it together in a short space of time and it was FREE to visit it did not cost you anything if you did not want to spend. We have leant a lot and hopefully people who think we should do it a different way will volunteer to help us put it on next year. Or give us the money to put up all the infrastructure neccessary on Mill Island.
Pictures on this site are great, showing how the vast majority of towns folk and visitors really enjoyed a great free day out.
