Formby Asparagus

As a former member of the Tufty Club, I recently went on a walk around Formby (see here) in the hope that we would see some red squirrels.  Sadly I was disappointed, but enjoyed walking around the old asparagus beds on the National Trust's estate..

Formby asparagus is grown among the sand dunes at Formby, and is world famous.  In fact it was supplied regularly to the large ocean liners on their transatlantic crossings, including the Titanic (but I'm not going to do any jokes about how it goes down well at dinner parties...).

There was a time when around 200 acres were grown, but most producers have finished.  There's one on Wicks Lane:
You can still buy asparagus at Larkhill Farm, but you'll need to hurry! Traditionally, no asparagus is cut after the 21st of June, and this year it's an early season.  You can also buy purple asparagus, which is sweeter than the green asparagus.
