Sidmouth - The Cheeseboard

I liked Alan and Liz Smith's The Cheeseboard in Sidmouth the moment I stepped into the shop.  They clearly know and care about the cheeses they sell and have a great selection of different cheeses:
There's cheeses from Devon - like Devon Oke from Curworthy near Okehampton, Devon Rustic, made near Totnes on the Sharpham estate from unpasturised Jersey cows milk and Mary Quickes Traditional mature cheddar.
They sell Ticklemore goats cheese from Totness and Inglewhite Buffalo cheddar (if you're watching your cholesterol, Buffalo milk contains 43% less cholesterol than cows milk).
They also do fine quiches and Chunk of Devon pasties, made 6 miles away in Ottery St Mary:

It's a bit of a sore point in Devon that the Cornish pasty recently gained Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status in Europe.  The earliest recipe for pasty in Devon is dated 1510, whereas the earliest recipe for pasty in Cornwall is dated 1746!  Chunk of Devon make particularly good Devon pasties and are Gold Star winners in the great taste awards.

They sell Hawkins coffee from Budleigh Salterton and, this being Devon, clotted cream:
There's a good range of preserves to go with your cheese.
They sell a very nice Gooseberry and Elderflower chutney from Otter Vale Products.  It goes very well with cheese, and Liz Smith told me it's rather good with mackerel.  She says when there's a shoal of mackerel in the bay, the sea looks like it's boiling.  When this happens, the fishmonger at the end of the Esplanade phones her up, so she knows to get extra jars out!
