The Cheese Society

Every now and then I visit somewhere really special, which I'd make a considerable detour to go back and visit, and The Cheese Society falls into that category.   It is a fantastic shop and just looking at my pictures brings back happy memories and makes me start to drool!
The shop specialises in British Farmhouse cheeses, but there's also some interesting continental cheeses.

I tried this Lincolnshire Poacher cheese:
made by Simon and Tim Jones, in the heart of the Lincolnshire Wolds.  It's a medium to strong cheese with rich herbaceous notes, and clearly made with love, and there's also a smoked version.

I tried and enjoyed some good blue cheeses, like Lincoln Blue and Cote Hill Blue:
(there's also a Lincolnshire Red if you're making a cheese Union Jack).

There's a rather fine map of cheeses
which looks rather like Harry Beck's famous map (and I also must mention my favourite - Barry Heck's Anagram Map).  Like the Underground maps they've taken some liberties, Appleby's is never above Mrs Kirkhams J!

There's a blackboard, showing some of the highlights:
and another one detailing the top cheeses for the month (proper cheeses change depending on the time of year and animals' diets).

You can't have cheese without some decent bread:
and they also sell Welbeck Artisan breads.

There's also a café, which naturally has a cheesy menu!
There's always a few non-cheesy options, but why would you want that here?

Kate, who is the owner, is well worth having a chat with, and is both knowledgeable and passionate about what they sell.  She introduced me to this Belperknolle cheese:
It's made by Herr Glauser in a small dairy just outside Berne in Switzerland.  It's a hard, mature cheese which has been rolled in salt, local garlic and pepper.  We had some shaved over pasta, it makes an interesting change from parmesan.

If you don't live near Lincoln, they do mail order, including monthly and gift selections.  Their Taste of Lincolnshire selection would make a lovely present.
