Navenby - Welbourne's Bakery

My first visit to Lincolnshire has been long overdue, and I wanted to start with something special.  So I went to Navenby to visit Welbourne's Bakery:
to try their Lincolnshire Plum Bread.

It's a nice traditional bakers:
The Welbourne family have been baking in the village since 1896, and people come from some distance just to try their plum bread.
Bizarrely, it doesn't actually contain plums, the word plum here refers to the dried fruit in the bread (as in plum pudding).  Several bakers in the area make plum breads,  Welbourne's is one of the oldest recipes and many consider the best.

The recipe has not altered over the years, apart from the traditional lard has been replaced with vegetable fat so that vegetarians can also enjoy it.

It best before date is 3 months after it's made, and it's supposed to improve with age, but in our house it didn't last a week!
According to a sign I saw, it's often buttered, but never beaten, it's nice with a slice of Lincolnshire Poacher, or Cote Hill Blue cheese and it's also nice toasted.
