London - Comptoir Gascon

The Comptoir Gascon is a delighful bistro/deli/winebar where you can have a taste of France in London.  It's situated in the heart of Smithfield, opposite the market.
It's a fascinating area - you can still see a sign saying "The Central Cold Storage" next to the Port of London Offices, - reminding us that there was a time (not so long ago) when fridges and freezers weren't in every house.

Inside there's a bistro where you can order dishes from the South of France like andouillette or cassoulet.  The Comptoir Gascon is famous for their French fries, cooked in duck fat.

The business is is one of four run by Toulouse-born Michelin chef, Pascal Aussignac, and you can buy a copy of his book Cuisinier Gascon (a celebration of food from Gascony).
To compliment the food, they specialise in wines from the South-West France, with a list of over 60 different wines.

At the other end is the deli area:
Here you can buy French bread, like baguette paysanne, campaillou, white levain, 8 cereals, and organic wholemeal:
and other items like duck fat, pâté or rillettes.

There's also croissants and patisserie:
like the beautiful coffee éclair at the top of this post.
