Orton - Silver Yard Café Deli

I've started this post with a picture of a rather fine pistachio and cranberry cake, which is home made at the Silver Yard Café Deli. It's a relatively new business (it opened in March) and another good reason to visit the lovely village of Orton. The Silver Yard Gallery, which is run by a cooperative of Cumbrian artists and craftspeople, is next door.
The deli showcases some of the best local produce from the Lakes and the Dales. There's a selection of local artisan cheeses.  They sell spice mixes (including a Cumberland Curry) from Starlys Spice Co.  This company started off in Orton, but is now in Staveley.  To wash your curry down, buy a beer from Nine Standards Brewery in Kirby Stephen.

They sell Findlater's Great Taste Gold award winning chicken liver paté. If you've got a sweet tooth, there's honey from Nook Farm and there's more cakes and tray bakes from Appleby Bakery.
The attractive 40 seater café sells food, prepared in their kitchen, that is fresh, local and seasonal wherever possible.

Did I mention it's on the C to C walk?  C to C stands for Coast to Coast, but here it could simply mean cake to cake!
