Orton Stores and Post Office

It's sad that many villages no longer have a shop.  The Village Store at Orton reminds me of my grandfather's corner shop, it sells so many different things:
They try and stock local produce as much as possible, so there's milk from North Lakes Foods, and cheese comes from the Lake District Cheese Company:
who's web site is cleverly named www.landofmilkandbunny.com!  A nice accompaniment for the cheese would be some tomato chutney
made by Quality Preserves in Patterdale.

They sell bacon and burgers from Slacks, a family run organic farm 2 miles away in Raisbeck.

The pies they sell are packed with meat:
and they sell Country Puddings - Great Taste Gold Award winning puddings:
made by Lynne, who's a farmers wife from near Ullswater.  Flavours include Bramley Apple or Rhubarb Crumble, Eve’s Apple Pudding, Jam or Syrup Sponge Pudding, and Sticky Ginger Pudding.  Make sure you buy some Creamy Vanilla custard to go with it - it's made with fresh double cream and Madagascan vanilla.  They keep well (assuming you've got self control) so you can buy a few and keep them in the fridge for when you've come home from work and are too tired to make something yourself.

If you've been hill walking (orrounding up the sheep) you probably deserve a cake:
The tea and coffee comes from Farrer's in Kendal
and you can buy a quarter (sorry a 100g) of sweets for the journey home.
