Sheffield - The Moor Market

As a small child I can remember being taken to Atkinsons "on The Moor" and being shocked to find there was no heather or bilberries! The Moor is one of the main shopping areas in Sheffield - Atkinsons have traded there since 1872!

However The Moor is undergoing a major redevelopment:
The new development has some distinctive architecture
and on the corner of The Moor and Earl Street, there's a new market which opened last November.
In the new building there's 200 different stalls, selling all sorts of things.
Many of the traders have moved from the Castle Market, which closed when this one opened.

Markets are always good places to buy cheap fruit and vegetables. In the Moor there's Suart's Fruit and Veg:
and Fruit Fayre:
There's also Barra Organics, who I've covered in a separate post here.

There's three fishmongers, Binghams:
Smith and Tissington
and Anthony Andrews
who also sell poultry.

There's plenty of butchers too, including Crawshaw Butchers, Micks Grade "A" Meats, Morleys Meats, R  & J Quality Butchers, Slatterys Butchers and Waterall Brothers. The last one is a specialist pork butcher, famous for their pies, who I'll deal with in a separate post.

Sheffield is an ethnically diverse city, so you'll find stalls selling goat meat and mutton:
and goose ends!
Does anyone know what you do with these?

There's Afro-Caribbean foods from Alaoma Food Hub
and also Continental Foods
Green Leaves
sell specialist Greek food, olives & cheese, olive oil, pickles, and semi dried tomatoes

For oriental foods, there's Wong's
This being Sheffield, quite a few shops sell Henderson's Yorkshire Relish
Turners Bakers:
sell tinned bread and oven bottom breadcakes and, if you prefer to make your own, S & J's (who I'll be covering in a separate post) sell fresh yeast.

The Nut Bar:
sell a range of dried fruits, nuts, seeds along with associated products like marzipan and icing.

Not every shop is a food shop, it was nice to see the Moor Cobbler Shoppe
still does shoe repairs as well as engraving, key cutting and sharpening.

After doing all that you'll probably be ready to sit down and have something to eat and drink.
There's a great and diverse selection of places here, and Cossack Cuisine will be getting a separate post. Also receiving a separate post will be Beer Central a wonderful shop selling local beers from craft breweries.

I particularly like the Pop Up Pantry, different stalls are here on different days.  Sadly Seven Hills Bakery weren't there when I visited, but there was a lady selling this gorgeous looking Caribbean Fruit Rum Cake:
and Kevin's Pies selling handmade pies like game and rabbit pie:
and also black dag (pork and black pudding) or hunter's pie:
 and these attractive tarts:
There was also a stand selling Spanish foods:
including Chorizo
and hand carved Serrano ham
