Gosforth - George Payne Butchers

George Payne is a founder member of the national Butchers Q Guild, which I have always found to be an indication of a really good butchers shop.  George started this shop in Gosforth (4 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne city centre) in 1987.  

The shop is a good traditional butchers, selling carefully sourced meat from local producers.  They are on of Rick Stein’s 'Food Heroes' and try to buy from local Northumberland breeders who practise traditional, non-intensive farming.  The shop is also accredited by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. 

I thought the shop's displays were great, it's only a small shop but they pack a lot in it.  They do their own dry cured bacon and pancetta.  The shop was a runner up in the UK final of this year's Butchers Q Guild BBQ Competition with a Smoked Brisket Burger.
