Stocksbridge - Goya 23 - Spanish Fine Foods

One of the places I enjoyed visiting the most this year was Edinburgh (and especially Stocksbridge) and I instantly fell in love with Goya 23, an Ibericos, wine and sherry bar that also sells gourmet food.

They sell Spanish cheeses like Sierra de Albarracín (made with milk from sheep who graze the mountainous range of Albarracín) and Queso de Oveja al vino (a sheeps cheese marinated in wine). They have preserved fish and meat.

You can buy Spain in a jar (traditional Spanish dishes in a jar, containing no preservatives or additives). For example there's oxtail with red wine sauce,
wild boar stew, pork loin with onion & peppers and Asturian pork & bean stew.

They'll carve you some pieces of beautiful Iberico de Bellota:
There's an area where you can sit and try the produce they sell:
They do some very different sandwiches with artisan bread and fillings like chorizo cooked in cider and peppers.

You can enjoy some fine wine with different meats, or cheese and other tapas:
They also do special tasting events.

I always think sherry is a very underrated drink in the UK, with many having just an occasional glass of not very good sweet sherry at Christmas.  So if you don't know the difference between an Amontillado, Fino, Manzanilla, Oloroso or Palo Cortado, this is the place to come.
Amaya and Roberto are very friendly and helpful, and passionate about their food.  It's a great place to educate your palate, and buy some lovely gifts. And remember, sherry is for life and not just for Christmas....
