I was rather hoping that Mad Jack would be the owner, but this deli is named after John "Mad Jack" Mytton, an eccentric Shropshire squire. He apparently was expelled from both Westminster and Harrow schools, and then went to Cambridge University (taking 2,000 bottles of port to sustain him during his studies). He left Cambridge without graduating, I can't think why!
They go further afield for their 100% raw chocolate, which comes from the Ashaninka (an indigenous tribe from the Amazonian rainforest in Peru) via the intriguingly named Chocolate Harlot Parlour in Wales. You can read more on their website about the health benefits of eating chocolate....
There's a particularly good selection of salads and cooked meats. I bought some attractive terrines:
and some Shropshire beef that wasn't over cooked like the average supermarket offering.

This new deli is opposite Mad Jack's restaurant and under the same ownership. The same people also own The Mytton and Mermaid hotel, which is just outside Shrewsbury on the banks of the River Severn at Atcham.
It's an attractive shop, they source local food where possible, but go further afield if they have to, to get top quality ingredients. Ham, bacon and sausage come from Maynards or Buttercross Farm, pork pies from Reg May and they sell Longhorn Berwick Estate beef and local Kelly Bronze turkeys.
There's free range duck and chicken Eggs from Hallowdene Farm and venison from the Attingham Park Estate. They do some nice frozen ready meals, like daube of beef with spiced beetroot.
They sell flavoured oils from the Mytton kitchens, Great Ness rapeseed oil, and Elfos balsamic vinegar with black truffles:
Their heather honey comes from Church Stretton and they also have clear or set honey from the Attingham Park bee hives. Coffee comes from just around the corner from Aroma. They sell their own bread and cakes, including mince pies, and chocolate roulades. They sell home-made Christmas cakes from My Cottage Kitchen in Shrewsbury. They go further afield for their 100% raw chocolate, which comes from the Ashaninka (an indigenous tribe from the Amazonian rainforest in Peru) via the intriguingly named Chocolate Harlot Parlour in Wales. Definately worth the visit and will return on a regular basis as I work in town.
It is just what we need to encourage people out of the supermarkets and to support our lovely market town.
Well done Mad Jack!
