I was recommended to the Post Office Deli by a colleague at work, and was very glad that I called there!
The Post Office Deli used to be Levenshulme Post Office. The deli still has odd bits of post office memorabilia dotted around the place. It's only been open a few weeks, but already has a loyal following. You can find them on Facebook here.
The owner is Terry Hemmings, who's passionate about what he does. What's on the shelves is what is used in the café and he doesn't serve anything he wouldn't feed his own family. There's bread from Barbakan Bakery and meat from W H Frosts in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, cheese from Leagram Organic Diary and the chicken and eggs are free-range. The deli sells Make Us A Brew tea from Mr Scruff (DJ, producer, cartoonist and tea drinker).
A sign told me "The Armada has arrived"! I spotted quite a few Spanish items like Membrillo (the Spanish name for quince) quince curd and Manchego cheese to go with the quince. There was spicy chorizo and these tins:
with all you need to make Spanish dishes like Fideuà de Pescado or Paella.
There's whole-food and organic items, like this organic pumpkin and lentil soup:
Special diets are catered for, with items suitable for coeliacs and people who are lactose intolerant.
Terry and his daughter decorated the toilets Jackson Pollock style as a bit of a joke:
but the customers like them - so he's kept it that way. I told Terry I still prefer the loos in The Philharmonic!
Upstairs there's a room that Terry lets local groups use free of charge, and also a small kitchen where new businesses can have a go at making produce. Despite being a delicatessen some people still think it's a post office so they sell stamps and also stationery from a local designer.
It's just around the corner from Levenshulme station, so only 5 minutes by train from the centre of Manchester. If you're travelling by car there's a handy car park at Station View, off the A6 (Stockport Road).
