Worcester

I can't do a blog on Worcester without mentioning Worcestershire Sauce, or is it Worcester sauce? Apparently owners of a chemist shop, John Leas and William Perrins, made a sauce for Lord Sandys who wished to repeat a recipe he obtained when he was in Bengal. They decided the sauce was unpalatable and it was left for a few years. When they tried it again, it had miraculously transformed into a most palatable sauce and the rest as they say is history.

I wouldn't dare say this in Worcester, but I prefer Hendersons Yorkshire Relish. This is a similar tasting but milder sauce and unlike Worcestershire Sauce is suitable for vegetarians.

Anyway back to Worcester. There's the Shambles Market (pictured left) where you can find Syd Smith & Son butchers and Cheese to Please.

According to Wikipedia "Shambles" is an obsolete term for an open-air slaughterhouse and meat market!

There's Macs and Jacks and at the other end of town Jenades, both are great cafés/delicatessens.

And there's also Papson's Continental Delicatessen.

I found two old fashioned sweet shops, where you can get a quarter of whatever takes your fancy, or should I say 100 grames?

There's a Farmers Market at Royal Worcester Porcelain,on the first Sunday of the month. There's another at St. Peter's Garden Centre on the outskirts of Worcester near Junction 7 of the M5 on the 4th Saturday of the month.

I've not yet visited either Farmers Market, and so can't report on them.
